Dining Review: Blugré Coffee

Blugré Coffee is a homegrown specialty coffee shop from Davao known for its durian-infused food and drinks. When I found out that they had opened a branch at Festival Mall, I’ve been meaning to visit them ASAP as I was very intrigued by their Durian coffee.
Coincidentally, Ate Ella, out of the blue (pun intended) asked if I was available for a coffee date; she was in Festival Mall and was into trying coffee at Blugré as well.

We were welcomed with a warm greeting; interiors were simple, clean, and spacious. There are two separate areas although I can’t comprehend the purpose of separating them. I asked one staff how to read “Blugré” and what it meant. It’s pronounced as “blue gray” and it means being in a happy state.
We ordered Cheese Bites, 3 Musketeers, Durian Coffeeccino, Cappuccino, and Dutertea.
Cheese Bites ₱125. Soft and cheesy – perfect pair with coffee! I like that they are bite-sized because you can share it with others. Taste was good, but not out of the ordinary. It’s just your miniature ensaymada.

3 Musketeers ₱275. It’s an appetizer platter made of potato wedges, onion rings, and dynamite. With 3 dipping sauces.

Potato wedges and onion rings were cooked to perfection. I have nothing bad to say about these. Now the dynamite was on point, but spicy! I remember saying, “Hindi yata bagay sa drink natin, lalong umaanghang!” Spicy food with a hot beverage is not a good combination. The attentive staff noticed us, and gave us a glass of cold water.

Dutertea (cold) ₱185. Thinking it was a tea from Davao in honor of our president, I asked the barista what’s this drink. He then answered, “it’s Durian and Matcha Green Tea”. Nice pun! AH! DU-ter-TEA! I ordered this drink because I thought it was funny! I tried to smell it before taking a sip, no bad smell there. The drink was sweet, smooth, and creamy with a kick of durian. I would prefer this texture and taste if it was made as a cake.

Durian Coffeeccino (hot) ₱185. Let’s go to highlight of this review! This is the first time I’m trying anything durian. I smelled my drink and it has that faint durian scent – nothing overpowering that may lead me to chicken out on this drink. The moment I took a sip past the dense foam, my eyes became larger; it was like a “eureka!” moment. The durian flavor complemented the coffee’s bitterness. If you’ve tasted dried mango dipped in dark chocolate before, then this is very much comparable to that taste — you just swap the mango to durian, of course.

All I can say is that you should try it at least once! This is a must. I enjoyed the hot durian coffeeccino, and maybe I would come back to try the ice blended one.
